Sometimes, things happen

Yesterday, I got a little validation. Brooks England, makers of awesome bike saddles, posted a link promoting a women's bike polo tournament. For the uninitiated, bike polo is like horse polo except A) instead of riding horses the players ride bikes and B) it's awesome. No, I don't know how  they ride bikes underwater, so don't ask. Even though I live a couple of thousand miles away from the UK, I was excited because I like bikes and I also like women. Plus, there was a video embedded in the link, and I love seeing people excel at doing the things they love. Believe me, these people excel. It was laden with misogynistic language that played upon the tired old stereotype that women are irrational, overly-emotional and indecisive. This is what I'm doing

I'm practicing my writing. A lot of stuff that you see here probably won't be very good, at least not at first. It is my hope that, by writing down the inane thoughts I have every day and posting them to this inane blog, I will refine my writing style. I've recently been inspired by this quote from NPR's Ira Glass: "Nobody tells this to people who are beginners. I wish  someone had told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple of years you make stuff, it's just not that good. It's trying  to be good, it has potential, but it's not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase; they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years  of this.
